Gov. Perry Pressuring Mexico Over Lake Shooting

Governor Rick Perry

AUSTIN – The search for an American tourist reportedly killed Falcon Lake last week has Texas Gov. Rick Perry insisting Mexican government do more to recover the body.

Perry told Mexico President Felipe Calderon to call him within 48 hours to update him on the investigation of David Hartley, whose his wife says was shot by Mexican pirates as they were returning to the United States side of the lake.

Perry said Wednesday that Mexico needs to use every resource available to find Hartley’s body and have it returned to U.S. soil.

The Mexican Foreign Relations Ministry said Mexico condemns “any act that endangers the lives of innocent citizens…and is committed to the investigation of those acts.”

The ministry said Mexico has been in contact with the U.S. to coordinate the search and recover of Hartley’s body “from the first moment.”

Mexican authorities reportedly have “stepped up their actions with the support of specialized personnel, boats and helicopters.”

Perry told The Associated Press that if Hartley’s body has not been retrieved by the time he hears from Calderon, then “we’re not looking hard enough.”

Perry has also used this incident to renew his demand that the federal government needs to do more to secure the U.S-Mexico border as northern Mexico sinks deeper into drug-gang violence.
